Roofing Literacy: Key Terms You Need to Know Before Getting a Quote

When it’s time for a new roof, understanding roofing terminology can make a huge difference in ensuring you get the best service and value for your investment. Roofing isn’t just about shingles—it’s a system of materials working together to protect your home. Knowing the language your contractor uses will help you make informed decisions and avoid misunderstandings.

Below, we break down the most important roofing terms to know before getting a quote.

Essential Roofing Terms

1. Shingles

The outermost layer of your roof, shingles are the protective covering that shields your home from weather. They come in various materials, including asphalt (the most common), wood, metal, and slate.

2. Underlayment

A waterproof or water-resistant layer installed under the shingles, the underlayment acts as an extra barrier against moisture. Common types include felt paper and synthetic underlayment.

3. Decking (Sheathing)

The foundation of your roof, decking consists of wooden boards (such as plywood or OSB) that provide structural support for shingles and other materials. If your decking is damaged, it may need to be replaced during a roof installation.

4. Flashing

Thin metal sheets placed around roof penetrations (such as chimneys, vents, and skylights) and valleys to prevent water leaks. Flashing helps direct water away from vulnerable areas.

5. Drip Edge

A metal strip installed along the edges of your roof to guide water into the gutters and prevent it from seeping under shingles and causing rot.

6. Fascia

The vertical finishing edge at the end of the roof’s rafters, usually where gutters are attached. It adds structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.

7. Soffit

Located under the roof overhang, soffits provide ventilation for your attic, helping to regulate temperature and prevent moisture buildup.

8. Ridge Vent

A vent installed along the peak (ridge) of your roof that allows hot air to escape from your attic, improving ventilation and energy efficiency.

9. Ice & Water Shield

A self-adhesive waterproof membrane that provides extra protection against water infiltration, especially in areas prone to ice dams and heavy rain.

10. Valley

The internal angle where two sloping roof sections meet. Because valleys collect a lot of water, they require extra protection, often with metal flashing or special underlayment.

11. Eaves

The edges of the roof that overhang beyond the exterior walls of a home. Eaves help direct water away from the siding and foundation.

12. Pitch (Slope)

The steepness of your roof, measured as a ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run. A higher pitch sheds water and snow more effectively but may require additional materials and labor during installation.

13. Square

A unit of measurement in roofing, equal to 100 square feet of roof surface. Roofing estimates often list materials in squares rather than square feet.

14. Tear-Off

The process of removing old roofing materials before installing a new roof. Some contractors may offer a layover (installing new shingles over old ones), but a full tear-off is generally recommended for better durability.

15. Warranty

Different warranties cover different aspects of your roof. A manufacturer’s warranty typically covers defects in roofing materials, while a workmanship warranty covers issues related to installation.

Why Roofing Literacy Matters

When you get a roofing quote, understanding these terms will help you ask the right questions, compare estimates accurately, and ensure you’re getting high-quality materials and workmanship. A knowledgeable homeowner is less likely to fall for unnecessary upsells or misleading information.
